Expressions in Rice
Expressions in Rice creates beautiful masterpieces of art using various grains and seeds to give each piece a unique appearance you won’t find anywhere else. Each creation is hand crafted meaning that no two pieces are the same.

RIZAGE is the process of creating artwork using naturally tinted rice and grains. Taken from the French words “riz” for rice and “age” from collage meaning to create a new whole by glueing different materials and forms together, rizage is a new art form which allows artists to create masterpieces that have exceptional beauty and versatility.

All tinting is created with natural color sources, such as spices, coffee, berries, etc. In addition, each piece is sealed with environmentally friendly materials that protect the grains and seeds from pests and help keep colors from fading.

The rizage technique was created by Dr. Regina Rei Lamourelle and Alexandra Lamourelle as part of a school project. Alexandra had an assignment to create a mosaic from the Byzantine era. She needed material for her project and Dr. Lamourelle suggested that Alexandra use an assortment of grains and macaroni. The macaroni and pasta were colored and she created a picture of Jesus with a crown of thorns.

Alexandra gave this to her grandmother as a Christmas present and other family members took notice of the unique technique and began creating their own pictures using rice and other grains.

Mission Viejo, CA has been Dr. Regina’s home for over 30 years and the place where she raised her four daughters. Dr. Regina and two of her daughters, Alexandra and Magali, still live in Southern California where they create Rizage pieces that resemble their own particular styles.

All three women have been awarded prizes for Rizage pieces entered into shows, including first place at The Orange County Fair Art Exhibition.
